SHIPPING
Q: How long will it take my shipment to arrive?
A: If you select ground service, most places will receive the shipment within 7 days of being processed by us in the store (i.e. once it leaves our store with UPS). Some areas may receive their shipment earlier or later, depending on how far away from us you live. If we are out of stock on an item or it is backordered, there may be a delay prior to shipment. If you do not receive your electronic receipt directly from us via email (not the same as the invoice you receive online when you place your order) within a couple of business days, that may indicate a delay due to product being out of stock. You may call us at any time at 1-800-672-9463 to check on the status of your order.
Q: Can't I just verify my age when I receive my shipment?
A: We are required by law to verify proof of age (at least 21 years old) upon purchase of alcohol. Therefore, we ask that you send your photo ID with date of birth (DOB) to us via fax at 540-552-6258, or send a scanned copy of your ID to us here via email if you have access to a scanner. We must have your DOB on file before we will ship your alcohol. **To those under 21: Do not try to send an order and hope that we will bypass this step or forget to ask for your ID for an alcohol purchase! We WILL expect to receive an ID from every customer who places a phone or internet order for the first time. If you are not 21, please do not violate the law by trying to purchase alcohol. Customers under 21 are welcome to order any of our non-alcoholic products. We are happy to ship non-alcoholic products to underage customers.
Q: Why won't you ship alcohol to KY, TN, GA, NC, MD, IN, or FL?
A: It is currently a felony for businesses to ship alcohol from Virginia to these states. Therefore, we will not ship alcohol to those states. If you have an alternate shipping address to which we can send your purchase, please contact us. **We WILL ship products that do not contain alcohol to the above list of states.**
Q: Can I figure out roughly what shipping will cost me before I make my purchase?
A: Use the shopping cart on our webpage as if you were going to make a purchase. Check your total without actually making the purchase, this will give you a very good idea of what your shipping cost will be.
Another way to generate an estimate is to go the the UPS homepage. Type in our zip code (24060) for the origin, and your own zip code for the destination. Add $3.00 (our usual handling fee for large boxes) and this total will give you a rough idea of your estimated shipping.

HOMEBREW
Q: What type of kit or setup for making beer is the best for me?
A: Each type has its benefits:
"The Beer Machine":
This is a machine that has its own specific cans to make certain styles of beer. For those who want the absolute simplest way to make beer, this is probably the method for you. It basically involves pouring the mix into the machine and waiting; it can't get much simpler than that! The limitations include: only certain styles are available, and you cannot really play with the recipes.
Liquid Malt Kits:
If you have a fear of anything to do with "cooking" and you want to make a beer that is interesting but doesn't have too many complicated steps, then the liquid kits in a can are right for you. They do not require as much equipment or many steps to make them, and the beer will be perfectly fine if you follow the instructions. There is some room to play with recipes, such as adding hops or changing the yeast.
Ingredient Kits:
We have a variety of ingredient kits that cover a very wide range of styles of beer. These kits allow the most stylized and flexible recipes. While they are the most complicated overall, the least difficult recipes are really not that hard to follow correctly. They come with detailed instructions, and of course the Vintage Cellar employees are always available to answer your homebrew questions. Some of the huge benefits to the ingredient kits are: 1) the use of only crushed grains and liquid malt, rather than crystal sugar, 2) the extremely pure strains of liquid yeast, and 3) bittering, flavoring, and/or aroma hops are included according to the recipe. Once you learn what types of hops and yeast you enjoy and so forth, you can begin to stylize your own beers and develop new recipes! There are ingredient kits suitable for novice brewers, as well as more difficult ones for experienced brewers.
Q: Is ID required for homebrew supplies?
A: Since homebrew ingredients are non-alcoholic products, they do not require proof of any age to purchase them. The ingredients we sell can be used for a variety of foods and other recipes, not just for brewing beer or wine. Customers under age 21 are therefore allowed to purchase them. However, if you are under 21, remember that it is against the law for you to use these ingredients to produce an alcoholic beverage!

WINE
Q: How do I find organic and/or biodynamic wines?
A: We carry a variety of organic and biodynamic wines AND beers in Vintage Cellar. When in the store, look for a green price tag. But be sure to check with the employees for recent arrivals or short-term specials, because not all organic products may be marked with a green tag.
Q: Do you carry kosher wines/beers?
A: Yes, we do carry kosher and kosher for passover wines. We have several beers that are certified kosher as well. Check with employees about finding them in the store. If you are looking on the website, use the Search function at the top of the webpage, and type in "kosher" (without the quotes) to look for all products listed as kosher.
Q: I would like to know more about pairing food and wine. What resources are there to learn more?
A: There are a number of websites that offer an incredible amount of information and ideas for food and wine pairs. Eatdrinkdine.com lets you find ideas starting with either the dish or the wine. Another website that explains the principles of pairing food and wine so that you can experiment further based on your own knowledge is on the Virginia Tech's enology department's page for the Wines and Vines class reading on food and wine.
